After Geneva (November 2005), Beijing (January 2006) and Vienna (June 2006), the International Community will gather again in Bamako for the 4th International Conference on Avian and Human Influenza, convened by the African Union.
One year after Beijing when the International Community committed some funds to implement the global strategy that had been discussed in Geneva, the Bamako Conference will gather prominent government leaders and technical agencies altogether with the main Donors. The Conference will assess the progress made in terms of the implementation of the global strategy, with a specific focus on Africa.
Indeed, at the time of the Beijing Conference, since Asia and Europe were widely affected, no outbreaks were yet detected in Africa with as a result very few funds targeted at Africa.
This is why a specific pledging session to specifically allocate funds to Africa for the control of the Avian and Human Influenza has been planned.
The Bamako Conference will be funded by the Republic of Mali, the African Union, the European Commission et the United States of America. The African Union will coordinate the preparation of the Conference and will receive the support from its usual technical partners (OIE, UN,...).
The ALive Platform partners have decided to strongly get involved in the preparation of the Conference by providing the Needs and Gaps for Africa Paper, based on the initial document prepared for the Vienna Conference. This document will be presented by the president of the Executive Committee of ALive during the Conference and will support the pledging session.
